In Search of the Hetton Railway Neil Sinclair

It is now over 60 years since the main part of the Hetton Colliery Railway closed and 50 years since the final section ceased operation. In this talk Neil Sinclair will use both historic and recent photos to show what can be traced of the route today, particularly in the built-up area of Sunderland. As well as the final course of the line, he will cover the sections of George Stephenson’s original line which were replaced in the 1890s and 1900s.

The Sinking of the Hetton Lyons Colliery in County Durham between 1820 and 1822   Alan Auld

Following an introduction, the talk will explain the importance of the sinking.  It will then discuss the actual shaft sinking, covering the geological and hydrological challenge, the shaft sinking people and then sinking method.  The subsequent mine operation and the 1860 disaster will also be discussed.  Later years will be discussed before final summary comments.
